The UK's Largest Power Station Look At Opportunities For A Coal Free Future
The UK's largest power station 'Drax' runs a coal and biomass plant in North Yorkshire. Due to the acquisition of energy supplier Opus Energy last year Drax boosted it's earnings to £121 million from £70 million. However due to the government set target of phasing out the use of fossil fuel for power generating by 2025 the power group still made a pre-tax loss. Drax has already converted three of its six units to biomass and in July it was revealed that burning wood pallets was on trial at a fourth, which was successful however further modifications would cost millions. The chief executive, Dorothy Thompson also revealed to investors in July that Drax are searching for opportunities to help create a coal-free future.
