What Living On A Plastic Planet Is Doing For Our Health

On Wednesday the 6th September it was exposed by The Guardian that tap water world wide has been contaminated with microplastics.

It is still unknown as to the effects the contaminated water will have on the seven billion people affected health. One thing that is known is that considering the effects this water has on life in the ocean, the need to find out is urgent.

Plastic in the ocean has been a problem for a long time and so it should not come as a surprise that microplastics have entered our tapwater.

Plastics often contain a wide range of chemicals to change their properties which are mostly toxic or hormone disruptors, additionally plastics attract other pollutants including dioxins, metals and some pesticides.

Climate change, pesticides, air pollution are all environmental problems in which the impacts have only become apparent years after the damage has been done. Microplastics in our water will hopefully turn out to be none toxic, however if it is this could be a tricky issue to deal with.
